WE NEED INCREASE OF FAITH
‘Increase our faith,’ The request of the apostles comes immediately after the exhortation of Jesus to offer forgiveness seven times a day if necessary, to someone who says ‘I’m sorry.’ A tall order… which is why they ask for an increase of faith. Jesus replies that the tiniest seed of faith will provide the power to up root negative reactions. Casting into the sea is repeating the image of Luke 17:2, the dramatic way of protecting the community from those who mislead young lives.
‘Increase our faith,’ The Lord then continues with a parable about daily faithfulness. The increase in faith which he wants to see is in fidelity or faithfulness. Fidelity is the backbone of daily perseverance. The Mass is boring! The rosary is so repetitive! I always make the same confession! The servant of the parable did the same daily chores out of a sense of duty, expecting no special reward. The most important acts in life are repetitive……heartbeat, breathing, eating, sleeping, etc. Do we call them boring? Daily fidelity matters hugely. ‘if it comes slowly, wait, for come it will, without fail … the upright will live by their faithfulness.’ (Habakkuk)
