SINFUL HUMAN BEINGS, YET GREAT SAINTS AND LEADERS

SINFUL HUMAN BEINGS, YET GREAT SAINTS AND LEADERS

Today we celebrate the Feast of two great Apostles of Jesus Christ: Saints Peter and Paul. They are the Pillars of the early Church, yet both were very human in their relationship with Christ. They received astounding graces. Peter was the first to profess that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah sent by God and the Son of the Living God. Hence, he became the Rock of the Church. Although, his human limitations tend to be a stumbling block in his effort to love and follow Jesus Christ, he learned forgiveness and mercy at the hands of Christ. He relied totally on the grace of Christ and the Power of the Holy Spirit to carry out the mission Christ gave him, even to the point of accepting persecution and death. Today, he is our model in following Jesus Christ and he is honoured in heaven and on earth. True faith in Jesus Christ will transform us and our situations in life.

Paul, encountered Jesus Christ as he persecuted and tortured Christians. He became a missionary, preacher and apostle to the Gentiles. He too learned forgiveness and mercy in the hands of Christ. It shows that these apostles and leaders of the Church were very human and sinful as we are, yet they relied on God and the transforming grace of Christ to become great Saints and friends of Jesus. We must believe the gospel and love Christ.
