The word Spirit comes from spirare, to breathe. Acts describes the air of life coming down as a powerful wind. The Responsorial Psalm expands on the idea that life is the breath of God on loan until it is returned to God when we die. This idea is behind John’s description of the death of Jesus: ‘Bowing his head he gave up his spirit/breath.’ His mission in the flesh was accomplished so his physical body no longer needed this breath of life. But after the resurrection the risen Lord passed this divine breath into his new body, the community of disciples.
He breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’.
