Today’s Gospel reading (John14:23 – 29) is part of the farewell message of Jesus to His disciples and friends. Jesus’ love for His friends is very deep and sincere. It is pure love that reveals the promises of God and how they are to be fulfilled. The promises made by Jesus to His disciples and all of us include: the coming of the Holy Spirit as our Advocate or defender when we are on trial. Jesus’ peace, is a kind of peace that the world cannot give. It is an inner strength drawn from the presence of God and the Spirit of God within us, amidst earthly trial.
The peace that the world gives depends on outer circumstances such as the absence of war or injustice and the avoidance of conflict or suffering. Jesus was at that moment facing injustice, conflict and suffering but his peace was drawn from the strength of God within Him. As St Paul said, “I can do all things in him who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13). We pray that we may share in the promises of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit will dwell within us, amen.
