LET US NOT LOSE SIGHT OF JESUS
Jesus was passionate and enthusiastic. He came to set the world ablaze. He knew that his challenging message would meet with counter-currents but he had the courage to plunge into the waters. Why has religion become dull, dreary, lacking fire or passion? Back-of-the- church stuff, no singing, clock-watching liturgy. Too many corner backs trying to keep the score down rather than believing that we can outscore any opposition. Where have we hidden the fire and the enthusiasm?
Let us not lose sight of Jesus who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection: for the sake of the joy which was still in the future, he endured the cross, disregarding the shamefulness of it. ‘We are certainly not seduced by the native expectation that, faced with the great challenges of our time, we shall find some magic formula. No, we shall not be saved by a formula but by a person.’ (John Paul II, Novo Millennio Ineunte, #29). While Peter looked at Jesus, he walked on water. When he looked at the waves, he sank. Let us keep our minds focused on Jesus. (cf. Silvester O’Flynn, Sunday Seed, 2002).
