CORPUS CHRISTI

CORPUS CHRISTI

My body is the package of life that is me. The son of God once lived on earth in a physical package of human flesh and blood. His visible package is now the consecrated bread and wine. A sacrament is the visible sign of the invisible grace. Chemical analysis would still show the properties of bread and wine. But our belief, based on the words of Jesus, is that the substance, the inner life, of bread and wine has been changed. Now it is the presence of Jesus as our food of life.

Sacraments effect what they signify. Ordinary food is changed into us. It becomes our fat, bone, tissue, hair, the energy we burn. But with the eucharist it is the reverse order. It is we who are changed. We become what we eat, that is, we grow in the likeness of Christ. The memory of his passion and resurrection are recalled, the soul is filled with grace and our future glory is guaranteed.
